Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park ... queenelizabetholympicpark.co.uk/ The ArcelorMittal Orbit is a 114.5 metre (376 feet) tall sculpture and observation tower in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. It is Britain's largest piece of public art, and is intended to be a permanent lasting legacy of London's hosting of the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, assisting in the post-Olympics regeneration of the Stratford area. Sited between the Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Centre, it allows visitors to view the whole Olympic Park from two observation platforms. Orbit was designed by Turner-Prize winning artist Sir Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond of engineering Group Arup.

As an infrequent visitor to London it was really noticeable how 'The Walkie-Talkie' (20 Fenchurch Street) now dominates the city scape and, to my mind, although a lover of modern architecture, destroys what seemed to be a balance of the old and new. It really isn't pretty, or even that striking ... just big!

"Buckingham Palace is the official London residence of the British monarch. Located in the City of Westminster, the palace is a setting for state occasions and royal entertaining, and a major tourist attraction. It has been a rallying point for the British people at times of national rejoicing and crisis. Originally known as Buckingham House, the building which forms the core of today's palace was a large townhouse built for the Duke of Buckingham in 1703 and acquired by George III in 1761 as a private residence, known as "The Queen's House". It was enlarged over the next 75 years, principally by architects John Nash and Edward Blore, forming three wings around a central courtyard. Buckingham Palace finally became the official royal palace of the British monarch on the accession of Queen Victoria in 1837. The last major structural additions were made in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the present-day public face of Buckingham Palace."

Australian War Memorial

Australian War Memorial

"The Australian War Memorial, London located in the heart of London, at Hyde Park Corner commemorates the Australian servicemen and women who fought in defence of freedom alongside Britons in two world wars. It was dedicated by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth and the Australian Prime Minister John Howard MP on 11 November 2003. The design for the memorial features a long, curving wall of West Australian green granite, reflecting the sweep of the Australian landscape. The wall features names of 47 of the battle sites where Australian and British military personnel fought, superimposed upon the names of 24,000 home towns of Australian servicemen and women, many of whom were never to return home."

Monarch Butterfly at Kew Gardens in London ... 'The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) has a black body with white spots and bright orange wings with black borders and veins (some white spots are dappled in the black wing areas too). Monarchs are poisonous due to toxins in the milkweed plant (milkweed is a foodsource for the monarch caterpillar) and their bright coloration serves as a warning to potential vertebrate predators.'
