Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park ... queenelizabetholympicpark.co.uk/ The ArcelorMittal Orbit is a 114.5 metre (376 feet) tall sculpture and observation tower in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. It is Britain's largest piece of public art,[3] and is intended to be a permanent lasting legacy of London's hosting of the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, assisting in the post-Olympics regeneration of the Stratford area. Sited between the Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Centre, it allows visitors to view the whole Olympic Park from two observation platforms. Orbit was designed by Turner-Prize winning artist Sir Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond of engineering Group Arup.

The Cage - Lyme Park - Cheshire ... 'The most obvious structure in the park, other than the house, is a tower called the Cage which stands on a hill to the east of the approach road to the house. It was originally a hunting lodge and was later used as a park-keeper's cottage and as a lock-up for prisoners. The first structure on the site was built about 1580; this was taken down and rebuilt in 1737, possibly to a design by Leoni for Peter Legh X.'

'Leeds' famous Black Prince in City Square was a gift from Colonel Thomas Walter Harding, Lord Mayor of Leeds between 1898-9 and sculpted by Thomas Brock. Despite having no connection with Leeds, the son of King Edward III became the landmark that greets visitors arriving at the city station. The King was the personal choice of Harding, who believed he symbolised the virtues of democracy and chivalry.'

The wood was opened on 6 October 1902 by Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria. The White Cloth Hall, Crown Street, Leeds ... now Pizza Express This is actually the 3rd White Cloth Hall, which opened for business in 1775. It provided a large area for merchants to trade in undyed cloth. The original building was rectangular, surrounding a large courtyard. The cupola on the roof came from the 2nd hall, which was demolished in 1786. The building was split in 1865 when the railway viaduct was built through it, and this is the smaller triangular part on the north side of the viaduct.

Bretton Hall in the grounds of what is now the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Hopefully it will one day be back in use before it sucumbs to decay ... Bretton Country Park is part of the estate once attached to Bretton Hall and is also home to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and a nature reserve. The country park includes 500 acres of lakes and parkland, housing various sculptures as well as being the home of several endangered species. Beautiful 18th Century landscaped grounds was originally landscaped in the style of Capability Brown, and included the planting of thousands of imported exotic trees, to the modeling of hills and valleys and the use of water and architectural features. 'One of the city's best-loved landmarks and also known as the "Elevator of Carmo," this extraordinary structure was built at the turn of the century by the Portugal-born French architect Raoul de Mesnier du Ponsard (an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel, explaining the structure's similarities to Paris' Eiffel Tower), to connect downtown to Bairro Alto (the lowest and highest points of the city). Originally powered by steam, it is 45 meters (147ft) high, and remains an interesting example of post-Eiffel iron architecture. The top of the Neo-Gothic tower, reached via a spiral staircase, has a cafe with splendid views of the city, including over Rossio Square, the castle and the river.'

Seen during a tour around Temple Works Leeds ... Heritage Open Days 2011 ... "Temple Works is a former flax mill in Holbeck, Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. It was designed by Joseph Bonomi the Younger and built by John Marshall between 1836 and 1840. Temple Works, also known as Temple Mill, was based on the Temple of Edfu at Horus in Egypt with a chimney designed in the style of an obelisk. Marshall’s inspiration for the design of Temple Works was his interest in Egyptology. When it was built it was said that Temple Works was the biggest single room in the world. One extremely unusual feature of the Temple Works building is the fact that sheep used to graze on the grass-covered roof. This served the purpose of retaining humidity in the flax mill in order to prevent the linen thread from becoming dried out and unmanageable. Temple Works is the only Grade I listed building in Holbeck." Temple Works Leeds www.templeworksleeds.com/

Midsummer Madness 2011 - Challenge 3 : Face ... 'Monday’s child IS fair of face. So you need to choose to photograph someone you consider to be fair (in the moral sense – someone you think is, or looks to be, honest and reliable) - it must be of someone you don’t regularly photograph (can be friend or stranger) – an occasional past photo is fine. - it doesn’t have to be a traditional portrait – but it must include that person and must involve them knowing you’re taking their portrait. - you should also ask them to take a photo including you. - you should tell them why you take photographs – what inspires your passion – and get their thoughts on that. - you should then combine all the above in some way and post the result. This is me and my teaching assistant today Tracey ... she likes my black and white photos and particularly the 'house' series of shots using nine photos so I incorporated these elements into the image. She took the photos of me, never having used the camera before ... a good result methinks!

The installation, reOrder, reimagines the classically ordered space to serve as a hub—a place for Museum visitors to congregate, relax, view temporary exhibitions, lectures, and, occasionally, see a performance. Situ Studio’s design consists of a series of stretched fabric canopies and integrated furnishings that swell, expand, and augment the profile of the existing monumental columns.'

Sutton Bank I ...

Stopped off at Sutton Bank on the way to Scarborough and thought I'd try some black and white landscape shots after hearing Martin Priestley talk at Exposure Leeds last week ... taken using four shots, a 10-20 sigma lens and 430EX flash ... tonemapped in Photomatix and processed in PS4 ... 'Sutton Bank (also known as Roulston Scar) is a hill in the county of North Yorkshire in England. It is a high point on the Hambleton Hills and the North Yorkshire Moors with extensive views over the Vale of York and the Vale of Mowbray. The hill is the site of one of the most important prehistoric monuments in the region: a massive hillfort built in the Iron Age, around 400 BC.'

"Lyme Hall was originally a remote hunting lodge. In Tudor times a house was built there and this was turned into an Italianate palace by the Venetian architect Leoni in the early 18th Century. It stands in a fine park with commanding views of the Cheshire Plains amongst ornate gardens. The house was once a home of the Legh family - later Lords Newton - who also had large estates in mid-Lancashire. The house is finely furnished and particularly notable for its Mortlake tapestries, wood carvings by Grinling Gibbons and a collection of English clocks. It offers a memorable glimpse of a genteel and extravagant age and has now become even better known since its use as 'Pemberley' in the BBC production of the Jane Austen novel Pride and Prejudice. It is managed by the National Trust with support from Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council." LeedsFlickrGroup TOTW #171 'Round'...

Knaresborough Castle ravens came in to being as a community project for the Millennium, with the permission of HRH. The Prince of Wales, as the castle belongs to him under the title of the Duchy of Lancaster, it was decided to have captive ravens on display at the castle so people could see them close up and get better photographic opportunities that are not always possible at the Tower of London. The ravens are under the care of Igraine Hustwitt Skelton. She holds the role of 'Her Majesty's Keeper of Castle Ravens, Knaresborough'. Leeds Flickr Group trip to Knaresborough - April 24th

'Tilted Vase' by Edward Allington 1998 ... (Bronze) ... "The first public commission in this country by internationally renowned Sculptor Edward Allington. The sculpture for Ramsbottom draws on the legacy of the Industrial Revolution in the Valley and is a "Monument to that past and a symbol of continuity and of change for the future". The sculpture is a fountain in the form of a vase, tilted, spilling water into the ground. The vase is classical in shape reflecting the architecture, built in sections and bolted together to look like a machine." Ramsbottom - Lancashire

Overnight, very Whitely, discreetly, Very quietly Our toes, our noses Take hold on the loam, Acquire the air. Nobody sees us, Stops us, betrays us; The small grains make room. Soft fists insist on Heaving the needles, The leafy bedding, Even the paving. Our hammers, our rams, Earless and eyeless, Widen the crannies, Shoulder through holes. We Diet on water, On crumbs of shadow, Bland-mannered, asking Little or nothing. So many of us! So many of us! We are shelves, we are Tables, we are meek, We are edible, Nudgers and shovers In spite of ourselves. Our kind multiplies: We shall by morning Inherit the earth. Our foot’s in the door.
